Day One

What we did on Day One:

From Seattle to Washington Dulles airport
From Dulles to Gettysburg via backroads
From Gettysburg to our hotel in Chambersburg, PA.

Our style of putting stuff on the blog may be a little different than the traditional because we each want to write something along the way and it's easier to do that by commenting in one fell swoop than it is to put a separate entry into the blog (..and if Microsoft Word will let us copy & paste our document onto the site, something that didn't work too well tonite). So it's likely you'll see a paragraph or two authored by John (JVM), then a couple from Will (WVM) or a couple from Pete (PVM).

We'll see if we can make it easy to follow. If we do, that'll be a first since it's pretty tough to follow if the ones in front have no idea where they're headed next. As a famous anonymous author once said (ever known a famous anonymous person?) "wherever you go, there you are", or "wherever there is space, there are people in the outer parts of it". :-)

WVM - the flight went relatively fast and uneventful. A few snacks, a beverage or two. Getting to baggage claim area was farther than normal, and baggage was a little slow coming. Stepped outside while waiting for baggage and it felt pretty good. At 6:30 a.m. it was a mild 70 degrees. We had an SUV reserved but ended up with a minivan (they didn't have any SUV's). As we left the airport area we headed directly to Gettysburg and got there really quick. Spent the good part of 4/5 hours there and still didn't see it all. We each took our own pics and will have them to share when we get back (pvm.... unless we can get the blogger site to accept the published picures we've been trying to send tonite...does technology never leave me alone?!! :-( ) Went to dinner tonite in Chambersburg at a local steakhouse and food was really good, finally found some good pork chops.

JVM - Why am I always last? The pecking order never changes.

As some of you know, I can be all over the map sometimes. Well, now it's literally true. In a matter of a few short hours we've set foot (okay, maybe not foot, but you know what I mean) in four states. The minivan that was supposed to be a Jeep actually turned out to be a blessing. You see as we were cruising the sites of Gettysburg it was a humid 83 degrees so we slid both of the sliding doors open and pretended not to know it was probably illegal.

Oh I almost forgot! this morning we ate breakfast at a little diner in Maryland where almost everything on the menu offered as one of the options - 'scrapple'. So of course none of the three of us had ever heard of it so we asked ever so kindly "what the heck is scrapple?" The waitress sort of chuckled and said in her slightly southern accent "It's kinda....well it's sorta.... at least I think it's like the scraps of this and that mixed all together and fried on the grill, it's actually very good." So I asked "so then it soooooorta like SPAM?" "Just try it!" she said. So we did. When she came back to the table after we had tasted this east coast delicacy and had less-than-pleasant looks on our faces, I said "you should just drop the 's' and the 'ple' off that scrapple and you'd have an accurate word for what it tastes like. It was terrible!

It sure is good to be on vacation... I do miss my kids though.
